my services

These days it’s extremely easy to self-publish a knitting pattern, but publishing a great pattern, that’s a little more challenging. If you want to create patterns that are well written, easy to understand, and have people coming back for more of your designs, consider working with me as your tech editor, ghostwriter, or grading expert! Having an extra set of eyes to check your written instructions, charts, math, stitch count, etc can only improve your pattern! Whether your pattern is nearly ready to be published, or in the beginning stages of being written, I can help.

I’ve written several patterns of my own, (including being published in KnitScene!) plus re-written and edited patterns for myself and my students when the instructions were not concise or accessible for knitters of varying experience levels. I attended The Tech Editor Hub’s “Learn to Tech Edit Knitting” course, where I learned how to tech edit in a professional capacity. Since then, I have edited, ghostwritten, and graded numerous knitwear patterns that are now published! Check out my services below to see if we're a good fit:

technical editing

What it is:

Knitting pattern technical editing is the process of reading through your pattern and marking it up to make it a more clear, easy-to-understand pattern. A typical pattern edit involves checking for the following things:
  • Gauge, materials, sizing/finished measurements, etc.
  • Spelling & grammar
  • Abbreviations, glossary, references, techniques
  • Stitch count, rows/rounds
  • Consistency between schematics, charts, & written instructions
  • Overall clarity

How it works:

  1. You contact me via email (kylen@yarnovereverything.co), yarnpond, Instagram, or TikTok.
  2. I provide an estimate of how long I think the pattern will take. (Typical estimates: simple accessories – 1 hr, complex accessories – 2-4 hrs, garments – 2-10 hrs depending on sizes and techniques.) My turnaround time for each round of editing is about 2 days, and I will let you know my capacity in advance. Once you’ve accepted the estimate, I will get started!
  3. After receiving your pattern PDF (and style sheet if you have one, or any other important materials) I will mark up your document using iAnnotate, and export the file to Google Drive OR email you the PDF. I will make it clear which edits are necessary to fix and which are just suggestions.
  4. I will keep you updated on the timeline, and let you know if I think I’ll go over the estimate. If your timeline is very quick, I may charge a rush fee. I always do 2 rounds of editing, sometimes more depending on the pattern complexity.
  5. After we agree the editing process is complete, I will send an invoice to your email via Wave. You will then have 15 days to make the payment via credit, debit, bank account, Paypal, or Venmo.

My rate for tech editing is $35/hr.

I use the iPad app iAnnotate, and mark errors in red, suggestions in blue, and changes according to your style sheet in purple.

ghostwriting & Grading

I input the numbers into Google Sheets, and let it do the calculations for me as I write the pattern.

What it is:

Ghostwriting is when someone hires another person to write for them - it happens all the time with books! So why not also for knitting patterns?!
Many designers hire out labor that they may not have time to do such as sample making, test knitting, and yes, even writing patterns! Using a designer's stylesheet for guidance, the ghostwriter captures the designer's voice and writes the content in a professional manner.
I began ghostwriting knitting patterns because I had already been writing and editing patterns for years, and also had a tendency to change existing patterns I was making into better, more approachable, and easily understandable patterns.
Then, if it's a sized pattern, I use Google Sheets to grade it into multiple different sizes, cross-referencing sizing charts as I go to make sure it will fit as many body sizes as possible.

I use a variety of sizing charts, including charts from Ysolda Teague, Jill Wolcott, and One Wild Designs.

Where do I get the sizing charts?

How it works:

  1. You contact me via email (kylen@yarnovereverything.co), yarnpond, Instagram, or TikTok.
  2. You send me basic pattern notes.
  3. After receiving your notes, we talk about scope of work and timeline. I then provide an estimate of hours.
  4. After I begin, I will keep you updated on the progress, and let you know if I think I’ll go over the estimate. If your timeline is very quick, I may charge a rush fee.
  5. After I write a first version of the pattern, I will send it to you for approval. If changes need to be made, I will do so. Then if grading is needed, that will be done after receiving your approval.
  6. After we agree the writing/grading process is complete, I will send an invoice to your email via Wave. You will then have 15 days to make the payment via credit, debit, bank account, Paypal, or Venmo.

My rate for ghostwriting and grading is $45/hr.
